Craftsmanship Story

Inspired by centuries old glass making techniques, Optic features a striking and elegant ribbed design across a tumbler, highball and carafe. With a reassuring weight and beautiful tactility, the collection comes in both a classic clear and subtle smoke color, offering both beauty and versatility in the contemporary or classic home.

Optic is a true celebration of the exceptional heritage behind glassblowing. As early as 1450, glassblowers in Germany were blowing glass into ribbed molds followed by a plain secondary mold, in which the pieces were carefully twisted to create a spiral effect. This technique spread throughout Western Europe, before being refined in Murano from 1550. English glassmakers followed suit in the late 17th Century when Champagne became popular in England, and the ribbed glass effect was deployed to hide the cloudiness that was rife in Champagne at the time.

Richard Brendon’s Optic collection is a contemporary homage to this fascinating history. Using the same techniques as those developed in the 15th Century, each piece features refined, tight ribbing throughout the height of the glass, whilst the base is polished totally flat to create a striking visual and clean contrast against the tactile design.

Product Care

Wash your glasses on the top rack of the dishwasher. Make sure that you are using the proper detergents for your machine and, where relevant, water softening agents. We recommend using Finish products.

If you cannot wash your glasses in a dishwasher, you can wash these by hand. We suggest simply running the glasses under warm water with a little detergent and then placing them gently on linen to drain before polishing with our extra large lint-free polishing cloth. Be careful not let the glasses touch the sink, rings, or other washing up items as this can lead to chips in the glass, or even breakages.

The products in this collection are made with lead-free glass which makes them resistant to clouding. If you do notice clouding on your glass then you will need to wash with water-softening, glass-specific detergents or even vinegar.
